#175: D003 The Monster of Tanov Pass From 25 Feb 1935 To 15 Jun 1935

Posting after a while. One more Daily that has a weird professor keeping monsters as pets.

Nice imaginative story here.

Thanks to the Australian Women's weekly archives for having this story published and made available. Thanks to Venkit Subramanian for extracting the scans from the PDFs and cleaning them.

This particular strip shows how brave Lothar is, I would guess nobody would like to be in his situation facing a monster snake.

The scans are much more readable...As always, liked the drawings of Phil Davis. Enjoy.

On another note, regarding World Cup Cricket 2011, this coming weekend India plays England at Bangalore, how do you see India's chances at winning the game? Are you all watching cricket on a daily basis or only following particular teams?

Today is a sad day for Indian comic fans. I hear that Ananth Pai of PAICO and Amar Chitra Kaths fame passed away at the age of 81.

May his soul rest in peace.

On the subject of cleaning, I am not an expert like Lothar or PBC. That is why the "cleaned" version don't look very "clean".

I am not a PhotoShop expert and rely on free tools like Microsoft Live PhotoGallery to do my editing. Maybe it is time for me to graduate to PhotoShop.

Venkit: Thanks for all the extra hours you spent making the strip readable.
Sorry to hear that Anant Pai died today.
Here is a brief note on Anant Pai:

Anant Pai was born in Karkala, Karnataka, India, in 1937.

He studied chemistry, physics and chemical technology, but he also had a passion for publishing and comics.

In 1954, he started a career in editing and publishing, finally becoming a junior executive in the Times of India Books Division.

There he was at the cradle of Indian comics with the creation of 'Indrajal Comics'. In 1967, the educational comics series Amar Chitra Katha (Immortal Picture Stories) was launched.

Each of the comics in this series was devoted to a person or event in Indian history, religion and mythology.

Anant Pai conceptualized of all of these, and wrote the scenarios for most of them.

The art was done by artists like Ram Waeerkar, Dilip Kadam, Pratap Mulick, Souren Roy, Jeffrey Fowler, H. S. Chavan, Madhu Powle and Chandrakant D. Rane.

The books continue to be an international success.

"Venkitachalam Subramanian" & "Phantom And Mandrake Fan": 1. I'm joining with your views about the Father of Amar Chitra Katha & Tinkle- Anant Pai.

In 1967, he watched a quiz program on television and was very disappointed to see that children were not able to answer who the mother of Rama was but were able to answer questions on Greek Gods. Children were mesmerized by western stories and did not know of the rich treasure of stories that Indian mythology and folklores had in store for them. Anant Pai had a mission now. He vowed to get known to children, their rich cultural heritage through beautiful Indian stories, beautifully animated and presented.

Yes, his dreams come true. I'm also an ACK edict. This series helped me a lot feeling "Proud Indian" & encouraged reading "Indian History & Mythology".

May God rest his soul in eternal peace!

2. Thanks for rare Mandrake strip! With clear heart what is shared is best. Lothar & TPH are best in editing & improvement. They not only clean, but fix & improve masterly.
But, if you are interested in learning PS, can say, editing B&W (such quality scans) are not tough task. With happiness can share quick method (auto cleaning).

Thanks Bala and Venkit for the strip. Very sad news regarding passing away of Mr. Pai. He did a remarkable job in bringing out those wonderful Comics about Indian heritage. My condolences.

Cricket world cup has been a dull event, at least during preliminaries, with so many weaker teams participating. India should have no problem in beating England at Bengluru. English batsmen can't play spin well.

Very sad news indeed. What he did for Indian comics readers is incomparable in terms of quality and content.

Thanks Bala and Venkit for this Mandrake strip.

Thanks for this rare daily!:)
About Uncle Pai,it's really a sad news....Yes,ACK is the only way of reading our rich history/mythlogy & folk tales in a graphic medium!

Personally,I love those Indian Folk tales(of various states & religions) & Moral stories(remember those animal tales?) ranging from Panchatntra,Jatak to any random titles!! :) [Just few days back,I was reading a new ACK Folk-tales from UP(#307)]

Two of my previous comments are not showing. don't know why.

Very sad news about Mr. Pai. And thanks for the strip.

Really passing of "Uncle Pai" is a great loss to comic lovers . We used to call him Uncle Pai only . When my daughter started reading Tinkle , she also called Uncle Pai .

He was to be honoured at recently held comics convention at New Delhi . No idea what happened as could not go on Sunday .

Regarding photoshop knowledge, TPH said Comics crazy is better than him but I found very good in PS .

We do not require very expert knowledge but good knowledge is always better .

Bala , & Venkit thanks for sharing these rare Mandrake comics .
Venkit help is beyound thanks .
